On the Rise: Green Collar Jobs

Companies across the country are becoming "greener" now, with firms everywhere enforcing stronger eco-friendly practices and initiatives. This growing trend towards environmentally sound solutions doesn't just benefit our own planet -- it has also given rise to the creation of more “green collar” jobs.

Green collar jobs basically involve labor work aimed at the conservation and enhancement of the environment. Companies hire workers to design, operate, maintain, and manufacture efficient technologies and renewable energies to help in conserving the environment. Popular green collar jobs include urban planners, environmental lawyers, architects, and engineers.

Aside from the creation of initiatives by private industries, the government is also active in the promotion of “green collar jobs”. The Green Jobs Act in 2007 uses the green economy as a “pathway out of poverty” in which $125 million is allocated for job training to attract workers and students to engage in eco-friendly type of jobs. In 2006 alone, 8.5 million jobs were provided by renewable energy and energy efficient industries. Furthermore, a study by the American Solar Energy Society revealed the continuous rise of the industry, with the possible creation of 40 million green collar jobs by 2030.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics also reported that as the green industry grows, so will the earnings of the country's future green workers. In 2007, for example, an environmental scientist could expect to receive an annual median earning as high as $56,100!
